I've had success with a gift (a simple 11 oz coffee mug with a photo of his family on it) I gave to a recent portrait client. Just last week he got in touch with me to say he wanted 8 more. This, coupled with a session I have this afternoon with a new client, got me thinking more about gifting and showing thanks. But like you said Michael, it is a form of advertising, and I do hope that the gifts I give bring in more business.
Back to the session this afternoon...I have a couple of seniors coming in for a casual portrait (set up by their daughter). The daughter wants 8 - 8x10 plaque mounted prints, and mom and dad are going to pick the print they like (while the daughter is paying for them).
I then thought of a unique gift I could give the daughter who set this up. I was thinking of creating a little web page of session proofs of the best images and putting that onto a CD for the daughter. It sounds like there's lots of brothers and sisters who will be getting the 8x10 prints, and so I thought that even though the parents are only choosing a single print today, their sons and daughters might be induced to buy more in the future if they saw a wide variety of prints from the session. And if I make the images quite small (roughly 400 pixels-max dimension) with a watermark, they wouldn't be good for anything other then proofing.
