Re: models?

Hi,

As much as I appreciate the discussion with Kevin previously, I still don't have a real answer.
Is there anyone out there with experience actually hiring models to build a portfolio who can/will give me some insight as to how much/little I should be paying?

Does everyone just rely on friends and BS at bars to find your initial models????

TIA

Pat

Re: models?

The world is full of people who want to be models, and I guess people who want to be photographers as well. You can easily get people to model in exchange for prints or digital files for a portfolio. I have a rule with myself that I always pay models for jobs that I might use commercially, and it's usually $20.00 to $50.00 per shoot.

There are a lot of true professional models out there, and they're usually represented by an agency. They run in the $100.00 to $200.00 per hour range, and will want licensing fees for usages outside of what's agreed upon in the original contract. Unless you've got a client paying the way, or you think there's money in stock sales for the shoot, this is not the way to go.

I once took a classified ad out looking for models, and I must have got several hundred calls. Now I use ModelMayhem.com to look up models (and they'll tell you how much they want right on the listing). Craigslist.org is another good place to place ads for modeling, or to look for people who want to model. You might also try the local modeling school, as there's alway people wanting free portfolio prints.

Re: models?

Hi David,

I just finished reading Amazon.com: The Digital Photography Book: Books: Scott Kelby

On page 162 of the book, Kelby says the following: "Here's a real world example: I hired a professional model for a shoot out in New Mexico, and the going rate was $15 per hour, plus I had to provide her with prints from the shoot for her portfolio."

The page discusses that when shooting in different locales a photographer should consider hiring a model.

I am just curious, how many prints do photographers usually provide? And those that provide cds, do they provide a jpg of all images shot? Hi-res images or a size suitable for viewing on a pc? And how do they manage their copyrights? I suspect this is all open to negotiation, but I am curious as to the common practice.

I look forward to your response.

Best regards,
Kevin

Re: models?

Hey,
Well here is the take on this one if you live in a big city like I do, here in NYC. If you have some experience working with models say as an assistant and are looking for models to develop your book, usually the agencies, will send you models to test. They are usually free to shoot, as the girls or guy's, depending on what you're looking for need pictures for their book. So, testing is usually free and the models don't get paid for testing. They need the pictures and you are providing them with the service for free. Now, the only catch is that you have to give the girls pictures of their choice and the ageny will usually go through them with you and you merely make them copies of the pictures they request. If it comes to having them printed at a prepress or lab, then they usually take on the cost for printing them selves and defray that cost. I've done plenty of shoots here in NYC, with some of the biggest agencies around from Elite to Ford and Ice Women, and have never paid for a girl to shoot or test.

www.onemodelplace .com is a good source for models, look for some inexperienced who want to get a portfolio started, some want pay but some will work for TFP time for prints or TFCD time for cd, either way offer them some cash to help with expenses and it also helps you find ones you might want to hire at a later date. My last paid model was $200. for nude and she was worth every bit of it
