...I have fond memories of my Nikkor 500mm f8 (and amazed at the almost solid glass of the Vivitar Series 1 600 (can remember the aperture).
Today I saw a copy of the (UK) magazine 'Amateur Photographer' which mentioned 2 mirror lenses from a company called 'Samyang' who have 500 and 800mm mirror lenses. These are manual focus.
Just made me wonder, was it autofocus that killed the mirror 'donut' effect.

I've got one of those 500mm Nikkor lenses, which is about 30 years old, and works great. It's not that sharp, but it was great for when I was a news photographer, and needed long glass that I could easily carry around.
