Pocket Wizard Plus II and Canon 1DMKII/20D

For those of you who connect a Canon 1D MKII/20D (or, any other camera with a T3 connecion) to a Pocket Wizard, do you use the Pocket Wizard CM-T3 MotorDrive Cable or, the Pocket Wizard CM-T3-P3 Pre-Release Trigger cable?

I am trying to determine the difference between the two apart from just the price.

I understand that the Pre-Release Trigger keeps the camera awake, in the same way that pressing the shutter button half-way does so it responds instantly but, if the camera is set up with manual focus (as a lot of posts on other forums appear to do), is there any point in purchasing this cable, which is more expensive than the MotorDrive Cable?

Thanks

I use the motor drive cable with a 5D and PW+II. Haven't had any issues with it. I used it to take pictures of a choir, in which I was a member, and it worked fine.

Re: Pocket Wizard Plus II and Canon 1DMKII/20D

I have had some success with an ebay remote release - it has a mini port on it for a PW cable and it of course goes into the body.
Put the body in DRIVE mode, manual focus.

It's cheap as you may have all the parts you need. I've had no problems in any test i've ever done. BUT at times it won't fire when set up as a remote and trigged off the PW on my main camera (hot shoe).

Now canon's hot shoe can be finicky at times. Try live view with a 580 and you get flash. With a PW you get no flash trigger event. No, I don't know why. I've not used the PC port on the main camera to see if it's more reliable triggering the remote body.

Perhaps I'll give this another go at saturday's wedding and see what I get out of it.

In my case, I didn't use a hot shoe for the PW as I had a remote flash cord connected to the hot shoe. I used one of those little grab-on mounts to hold the PW, so I didn't have that problem. I triggered the setup with a hand held PW from the subject position.

Re: Pocket Wizard Plus II and Canon 1DMKII/20D

I had recently purchased 2 Pocket Wizards with the drive cords from BHphoto. I know these are the pro's choice in wireless, but I found the build quality of the units and the cheap cords to be less than I hoped for. The disc lock down wouldn't tight down on the hot shoe of the 1D3. Unfortunately I returned all to B&H.

Any recommendations on alterative wireless systems for the working professional?

I wouldn't be without my pocketwaizards but some friends use povertywizards, think you can get them off ebay.
