I've used many pocket wizards and found them superb. My only complaint when I bought something for myself, was their price. So looking around I found the Elinchrom system and bought that. Its VERY reliable. I've been using it for over a year - I shoot fashion - it has been superb. The max range is not as great as a PW, however, having said that the max range is well above what I would probably ever need. The PW's range is never going to be used by most people.
You can get really cheap infra red gadgets from ebay. But I hate missing frames and needed reliability. So went with the Eli. Another good point is its size. Its tiny. The PW's are big on camera. The Eli is extremely small and lightweight. The rechargeable battery in the receiver lasts for months without issue. And I've not had to change the transmitter battery yet.
Another reason for going for the cheaper system was that I needed two sets. To use Canon flashes off camera sometimes. The cost of 2 sets was the same as the cost of 1 PW kit.
Have used them with studio flash many many times as well. Extremely good system.
Regards using leads with the PW's. Not sure why you would need to. I used to use them on my 1Ds Mk1 straight on the hotshoe. They tightened down just fine. If it wasn't for the price and the size of the units, I would have happily purchased them.

I have a Mark 3 and a mark 2. I just use the motor drive cable as you can just turn off the sleep mode in camera. Camera always stays awake this way andd is not a function of the cable. Maybe the # have changed over the years but I use PW #CM-N3 motor drive cable fits eos3, 1V,d200 and my Mark 2 and mark 3..
