Re: What was this photo shot with?

It's clearly a wide angle photo yet the depth of field is still fairly short. That implies a large sensor and an expensive (large aperture) lens.

Could this photo have been manipulated to shorten the DOF? Possibly, but it would have taken a lot of work and I don't see much of any evidence of that kind of editing. Could someone have "dumbed down" the colors to give a high quality dSLR image the look of a less expensive model (or perhaps film)? Absolutely.

Thanks Noel,
The resolution seemed low and the color balance seemed blue to my untrained eye.

Re: What was this photo shot with?

It's definitely a full frame dSLR camera, like a Canon 1Ds or 5D, or Nikon D3 or D700. With the focusing issues on the 1D MkIII, along with significant price rebates from Nikon, a lot of news services have adopted the D3.

It's a slight wide angle, like a 35mm or 28mm. You don't see a lot fixed length lenses on the campagne trail, so my guess would be either the 28-70mm, or 24-70mm lens, shot wide open. This really shows how great these new cameras are in low light situations.

No way at all this was shot with a point and shoot.

Digitally manipulating the DOF in a news photo would be strictly forbidden.

Maybe they'll get Obama to be the cool guy on the new Mac ads?

"Strictly forbidden". Heh. I don't put anything past the "tabloid" news media any more.

Why the assumption that it's a news photo? Granted it probably is.

I imagine Barack's family and friends take pictures of him too.

I may be off base here but regardless what camera and lens was used, the image looks like a composite. The head looks like it was placed into that image.

Jerry, lighten up.

Yes, it does. Agree with the other comments that the Depth of Field suggests a full or large-frame camera; that and the strong contrast suggests a large aperture (expensive), short-end zoom. But the contrast could have been tweaked in post processing.

You're not going to get a definitive answer for your bet, since the image has been resized and recompressed as a PNG so there are few clues on the original.
