filters yes no maybe?

your opinions on filters, clear,, daylight etc.

not nd or colored, not specialized

just plain everyday daylight

most use them as protection or to cut down on uv

Re: filters yes no maybe?

When I first converted to digital, I thought that I may not need UV filters, so I bought NC filters for protection. But I noticed once in a shot in the Alps where it appeared that there might be some haze effect due to UV, so I switched back to UV filters. I use them all the time for protection, but I'm careful to buy only best quality filters, as I see no sense in degrading a fine lens with substandard filters.

I use them on every zoom mostly for protection. I've seen filters save front elements plenty of times, not to mention that on the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 you must have a filter installed to receive the full benefit of the weather sealing.

Re: filters yes no maybe?

All the time, every lens. UV, I figure it doesn't hurt image quality wise and may help (I use good filters). I've also had numerous lenses saved by filters. My Tamron 28-75 went in for repair Monday because it got dropped four feet onto a stone floor. It still works fine, the filter ring is just broken and I want to get it checked out. The filter that was on it was totally shattered. For that kind of drop, I'm pretty happy and the filter takes a lot of the credit for taking the damage.

Filters out the studio, naked in the studio. I dont see much use for coloured filters anymore. Every RGB file is in effect 3 B/W images.

Re: filters yes no maybe?

I use uv just for protection. Some years ago I wasn't using them until one day I saw my dog jumping at a friend's shoulder just to lick his face. The dog' was a german shepperd (strong legs) and his front left leg scratched the filter infront of a quite expensive 50mm Leica lens. However lens remained intact and this incident cost us just 20 euros (to replace filter)

Eversince, I use UV at all lenses

Re: filters yes no maybe?

I use UV filters for protection when shooting events. I leave them in my bag when I'm shooting landscapes / nature where I am more likely to be switching out other filters (i.e. polarizers, ND grad, or none at all).
