Assistants needed in the UK ?

There is a lot of talk about assistants in the US, but is there a demand in the UK aswell?

I am interested in starting in a photography career, and am currently looking for a course that I can take in the UK (North West) to start me off.

Is it a good idea to take a course and then try to assist, or try to assist someone first?

Re: Assistants needed in the UK ?

Oh, and I forgotto ask, can anyone recommend a good course to take in the UK for someone looking to start in photography?

I have looked into taking a HNC, anyone have experience of this sort of course? Worth while?

I am 28, with a degree (not in photography), with an interest in digital photography/editing.
