BTW that above reply applies to my lacie 2TB array regarding data transfering, no problem with my lacie 250GB HHD (non array) transfering lots of data.

regarding using a UPS for my external HHD storage. you say power failures/spikes are a good source of problems. i've been using it for a while now, and i only turn it on to transfere data to or fro, eject it from the desktop and turn it off, leaving it connected to power and the computer.

any problems with this?

Nope, should be fine as long as you don't have a power failure while you're using the drive.

Most UPS have some sort of voltage spike filtering. If you are not going with a UPS, good idea to have filtering anyway, and they are not expensive.
